Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
July 29, 2005
Size: 4 inches

Moved
Moved from Giant Vinegaroon.

Edit
Corrected county field. I hope you don't mind

you both are correct
Thanks for your opinions on this bug. When I posted the bug on this site
I also send the same picture to the Desert Museum in Tuscon, Arizona. They confirmed it is a Vinagaroon. They told me it is a very dosile bug.
Yes I smelled the scent it created when I handled it. I have now released the bug back where it was picked up by my 6 year old boy.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your help!!!

I agree
with Chris and Christopher. They defend themselves by spraying a mist of acetic acid when molested. You probably noticed this when handling it.

please let me know
If anyone has an ideas as to the kind of bug this is please let me know.

Vinegarone (Thelyphonidae)
Based on the described size, geographic location and general appearance, I would definitely say it is (or closely related to) a Mastigoproctus giganteus (largest known whip scorpion), but let's see what the experts say...

Whipscorpion
This is some kind of whipscorpion
