Size: 1/4 of an inch/ about 5mm
found something looked like a nest (looked like there was some dusty , moldy looking one inch growth on the carpet) in carpet and picked up this insect from next to the hole.

I also saw some even smaller crawly things in the whole. I can't tell if those smaller crawlers had captured this bug or the other way around. Or is this a baby of whatever lives in that next under the carpet.

Western subterranean termite soldier...
The orange rectangular head with dark pincers (about 1/8" - 1/4" long) would suggest Reticulitermes hesperus. The smaller crawly things you mentioned would be the colony workers. This particular species does a lot of structural damage and is a major offender in California.
