Spotted moth - Yponomeuta

Spotted moth - Yponomeuta
Wellfleet, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA
July 26, 2005
Size: Small; a few centimeters
A striking diurnal moth I found on milkweed on Cape Cod last week. There were quite a few of these nectaring on milkweed flowers just next to the woods (pine and oak). A surprise to find when I was looking for Coral and Striped hairstreaks. Any suggestion on what this is?

**Added later: I now think this is an Ermine moth, such as American Ermine Moth, Yponomeuta multipunctella, Hodges number 2420. Anyone knwo for sure?**

I've wondered about these for a long time myself. There are 3 species that all look alike in the eatern U.S. Y. multipunctella is "suppose" to have 4 distinct rows of black dots, Y. cagnagella 3. Yours seems half way inbetween. I sure hope we get some comments on this.

spots
This certainly seems to have more spots than the cagnagella images at mothphotographers where Troy's image is posted as multipunctella. We'll move these both to Yponomeuta and await Dennis's decision.
