Ants - Prenolepis imparis

Ants - Prenolepis imparis
Powhatan County, Virginia, USA
Can anyone ID these ants? - Thanks

Moved
This prize winner shouldn't have sat so long unidentified. Browsing other images of the species, you will encounter similar configurations of workers of this species.
Not to worry about them exploding -- These critters are famous for their expansible gasters, with crop contents when feeding on liquids as in this case, or with accumulated fat in yearling workers.

Photo Contest
I just found out that this photo won Grand Prize in the Virginia Wildlife 2005 photo contest and appears on the back cover of this months issue.

Congratulations Chris,
a prize well deserved!

Great job!
I always thought it was a winner!

Thanks
Thanks to everyone! Glad you all liked it!

Wonder
what they're imbibing. Wonderful rhythm in this photo!

artistic pair
This one (15 ants drinking on a leaf) would make a good companion piece for 13 bees sleeping on a cosmos flower - enlarged ten times and hung on the wall of an insect art gallery. Anybody planning one soon?

I agree
a wonderful photo!

Some of them
Some of them look like they better stop drinking or they're going to explode!
