Slender Meadow Katydid - Conocephalus fasciatus - male

Slender Meadow Katydid - Conocephalus fasciatus - Male
Southpoint Mall area, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 28, 2005
Size: 25 mm
Detail of cerci. I was able to restrain the katydid by holding the wings with blunt-tipped forceps and then to pull the wings out of the way in order to photograph the cerci from the top (dorsal side). They agree with the illustrations for Conocephalus fasciatus at Singing Insects of North America: genus page and species account. In particular compare their illustrations:

C. fasciatus/C. brevipennis/C. stictomerus

Those seem to be the possible species in this genus for this part of North Carolina that have cerci roughly matching the photo. C. fasciatus seems to be a good match. Note the color (green) as well--see notes under other image.

This cooperative katydid was released into my garden, where it flew off quite rapidly.
