Drone Fly - Eristalis tenax

Drone Fly - Eristalis tenax
Sunnyvale WPC Ponds (south SF Bay), Santa Clara County, California, USA
December 11, 2008
Size: ~11-13 mm
Would like to get this syrphid to at least genus level, if possible. Female? (unfortunately, no better shots of this individual, but eyes appear to not touch)

Moved from Eristalis.

It didn't seem like any consensus had been reached, so I'm moving this to the genus page for now. With 7 pages of unidentified images in this section already, it sure would be nice if an expert would come along and sort some things out...

thanks...
We have a number of syrphids locally -- the commonest is Eristalinus aeneus, dubbed by me the Speckly-eyed Syrphid Fly. That one is found virtually all year. This one I find only in Nov/Dec -- its head is darker than the others, thoracic stripes faint or absent, the eyes coal-black, very hard to photograph. Seen here on Bristly Ox-tongue (Picris echioides), an invasive thistle.

ID
Eristalis tenax, the Drone Fly?

Nice find, nice photo
Hope it wins you an ID.

Syrphid, sure
