This is what springtails really look like. This is a large, hollow, rotten log. The short, dark lines descending to the right are the wood grain. The short, dark lines ascending to the right are springtails. I mistook them for dirt or mold at first.

Cropping?
I think that this image would be more informative if it was cropped and showed only the area where the springtails are more concentrated. They would look a little larger and still you could see the wood grain and get the idea.
