Identification
Adult: wings clear except for brown-bordered white veins, and dark brown shading immediately surrounding several elliptical clear spots near middle of wing
Larva: fused sclerite sa1 on the third thoracic segment is a distinguishing character; another sclerite on the third thoracic segment is located posterior to each side hump
larval case made of large pieces of wood or sometimes pieces of grass
Habitat
attached to plant material submerged along banks of small streams
Remarks
According to the NatureServe Explorer site (see Internet References below), H. argus is widespread in eastern North America; H. hesperus and variabilis are restricted to the west coast, and H. victor is restricted to the extreme northeast (NS QC ME VT). However, the site cautions that the data is known to be incomplete or has not been reviewed.
