Trypherus vs. Belotus
Mike, for those of us who got this ID wrong (and also for the contributor), it would be incredibly helpful and instructive if you could comment as to what the distinguishing characteristics are between these genera. Given your intimate knowledge and expertise with the coleoptera of Texas, you would be the perfect person to shed some light on this subject.

(Hmmm, I do see from the comments on this post that perhaps it is an issue of regional limitation...)

my guess is Cantharidae or Oedemeridae

 
I had been looking in all the wrong places...
...but after reading Margarethe's excellent suggestions, I stumbled upon this very similar looking Try*pherus species (also from Texas):



Just a guess though, please wait for an expert to confirm.
