Ant hauling honeybee thorax - Pogonomyrmex californicus - female

Ant hauling honeybee thorax - Pogonomyrmex californicus - Female
Tucson, Greasewood Park, Pima County, Arizona, USA
April 12, 2009
This worker harvester ant was hauling the thorax of a honeybee out of an arroyo ("wash"), while a comrade was carrying the bee's abdomen. Never saw a third ant with the bee's head...Identification made by comparing to images at Myrmecos.net website. Greasewood Park pretty much 'is' in the Tucson Mountains, which is where Alex Wild took his images of this species. Imaged with a Canon SX10 IS on "auto" mode using the "macro" function.
