Two ants, two-thirds of one honeybee. - Pogonomyrmex californicus - Female
Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA
April 12, 2009
Size: Small for a "Pogo"
These worker harvester ants were hauling the thorax and abdomen of a honeybee out of an arroyo ("wash"). Never saw a third ant with the bee's head...Identification made by comparing to images at Myrmecos.net website. Greasewood Park pretty much 'is' in the Tucson Mountains, which is where Alex Wild took his images of this species. Imaged with a Canon SX10 IS on "auto" mode using the "macro" function.
