Black Caterpillar Hunter - Calosoma frigidum

Black Caterpillar Hunter - Calosoma frigidum
Ontario, Canada

this was as close as i could get to the active bug.

Moved from Calosoma.

May not be C. sayi--C. calidum or C. frigidum
I do not think the range of Calosoma sayi extends into Canada. I believe this is probably one of the other, similar, Calosoma species, such as C. calidum. There is a Ground Beetles of Candada web site with many photographs of specimens, see this link. Looking at that page, it looks like C. calidum or C. frigidum to me, displayed here, I hope. The punctures on the elytra look like. C. frigidum in those specimens, I don't know if that is diagnostic.

Yes, they are fast--good job getting a photo of one on the run--I've had to capture Calosoma to get any photos.

I'll move this up to the genus level for now. Perhaps someone familiar with northern species can help.
