Cylindrical bark beetle - Bitoma quadriguttata

Cylindrical bark beetle - Bitoma quadriguttata
Chantilly, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
April 16, 2009
Size: ~ 3 mm
Found under the bark of a dead tree. My best guess is Bitoma quadriguttata.

correct
As long as it has the markings it is unambiguously quadriguttata. If it had lacked the markings, it would take a little more careful inspection.

Thanks Rick!
If I find a markingless specimen, which part should I focus on in taking photos?

ventral view maybe
I often use Karl Stephan's guide to Colydiids which is available on the web. Sometimes B. quadriguttata is all dark or all red and looks like several others from the same range. Stephan used the eye size and ventral eye separation to distinguish them. I always have the specimen in hand so am not sure how well this would work from a photo of the underside.

Thanks!
I'll try it if I have a chance.
