Open grassy, rocky/gravelly area in open oak woodland. Elevation: 5135 feet. This beetle walking on the ground, exploring the base of a grass clump, then going to the next clump. The undersurface of this beetle is very hairy.

Didn't measure but guessing 8-9mm.

 
Phobetus?
I wonder if it could be a member of the genus Phobetus (which is not yet represented in the guide!)? Someone with more scarab knowledge will need to weigh in, though, I think.
