Luna Moth caterpillar - Actias luna Luna Moth caterpillar - Actias luna

luna moth larva
they are ridicusoly beautiful but how can you tell this between a polyphemus caterpillar? (also in the giant silkworm family)

Here's what I think is the difference
From comparing pictures in Wagner's book (1), the Luna has a thin white line running the length of it's body on the side, and the face is green instead of brown, and the red spots on it's side are paired up close together.

wow!
They are even beautiful as larva! I have never been lucky enough to see one in the wild (adult or larve).

They are wonderful
and I've only seen a couple of them myself.
