Agraulis vanillae - Agraulis incarnata

Agraulis vanillae - Agraulis incarnata
Culver City, Los Angeles County, California, USA
February 9, 2009
I was walking my dog at approximately 16:00 and noticed this. I clipped the vine and brought it home for photo. The next morning it was gone leaving just the casing. I think the antennae are representative of Papilionoidea, but not being a bug expert, I'll defer to your identification.

I'm not an expert either, but...
the general color patterns fit those of the Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, which is very common in the Los Angeles Basin.

They're not native, but came along when their food plant, the passionflower, was introduced for ornamental use. Although there isn't much of the plant left to identify, the tendrils are certainly consistent with those of some kind of passion vine.

Thank you.
I tend to agree with you. I knew I forgot something...the plant on which I found it. I really appreciate your help. I tried looking through the guide, but I am not exactly how is the best way to use it. As I am not an entomologist, I don't know scientific names. I wish there was a guide based on insect, color or other indentifiers. Oh well, thanks again. I think I am supposed to move this now that my bug has been identified, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Do you know?

Hey, I'm very concise when dealing with royalty.
(I know a king doesn't have time to waste.)

Ha ha ha ha ha!
Thanks!

Now I apply for the post of court jester.
And you're welcome, your Highness.
