Rose Sawfly - Endelomyia aethiops - female

Rose Sawfly - Endelomyia aethiops - Female
Fairfield, IL, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
April 18, 2009
My roses have heavy traffic already. Aphids have moved in. Saw a syrphid ovipositing on them yesterday but didn't get a pic. Now today I find this sawfly ovipositing on all most every leaf.

For the last three years my roses have had infestations of what has been ID'd as Endelomyia aethiops but I have never seen an adult and we have no images in the guide. Both Lynette Schimming and Cheryl Moorehead have uploaded images of sawflies on roses that look similar to this. These have been ID'd as Caliroa cerasi based on proximity to pear trees with documented infestations. Based on my observations I would ID this one as Endelomyia aethiops and suggest that we reconsider the classification of the other two images.

Glad you finally got an answer on this one, Steve!

Endelomyia
Endelomyia aethiops (Fabricius). This and Caliroa cerasi look very much alike - both size and color. No Caliroa are on roses, and the antennae are more like Endelomyia.

Two more for your review?
Thank you so much for taking the time to settle our questions regarding this image! There are two other images in the guide of similar-looking specimens which were also photographed on roses: this one which is still at Family-level, and also this one which is currently identified as C. cerasi. Should both of these be moved to E. aethiops as well?

Both those others are also En
Both those others are also Endelomyia aethiops.

thanks for sotring things out, Dave--
what then about this one:

Wonderful!
Thank you again for you help in this matter. It is great to have your expertise here on this site!

Something to consider...
Steve, I found your comments on this post very interesting and think others may as well. You may want to consider adding a post in the Possible Misidentifications forum with a link to your image in order to call more attention to your query.

Thanks
for the suggestion. I had forgotten about that forum. Consider it done!
