Found on my kitchen ceiling.
Is there a special organ on the third pair of legs?

I agree with Jay that this is a male H. pyrrithrix.

Really nice
Definitely an adult male Habronattus.

Based on markings and known ranges, I think this might be H. pyrrithrix.

Ornament
Males of Habronattus species often have ornamentation on their legs and bodies for use in courtship, and third-leg ornamentation is often quite distinctive. This is probably the reason for the most-visible diagnostic feature for the genus: the third legs are longer than the first legs.

Since I'm not an expert on spiders, I hesitate to give this as a positive ID, but it certainly looks like a Habronattus to me.

There's an excellent website on California Habronattus species I would highly recommend.

Nice shots. Both of the same spider?
If so, they should be linked to aid in identification. See the Help tab for details.

Briefly, click tag, and you'll see a thumbnail in the left column.

Repeat for the second photo.

Select link images, and they should come together in a single post.

To make things easier next time, you can click add image when the first one you post is displayed. You then get a partially filled-out form, where you can specify the subsequent image(s).
