Size: 9 mm.
Found in a pail of water near Spruce and Oak trees.

The temple appears to be nice
The temple appears to be nicely rounded (area behind the eyes), which allows me to ID this to Hypnogyra. I'll check my specimens on Monday, but I'm quite certain its this genus. Oak forest is a typical habitat for these guys, and at least one species is associated with the debris that settles in oak tree holes. Not a commonly seen beetle. What a wonderful thing to fall into your pail. :)

Hypnogyra
Thanks, Adam!!
I still have him (or her) if you need more images.
A few days ago I had a large hollow Red Oak taken down not far from the pail where this one landed.
I was sad that the big old tree had to go, but liked the opportunity to have so much hollow tree to look in for creatures. Oddly I haven't had much luck finding creatures inside the tree although they must be there and I just don't know good techniques to find them.
