Resaca planthopper - Itzalana submaculata

Resaca planthopper - Itzalana submaculata
World Birding Center at Resaca de la Palma State Park, Cameron County, Texas, USA
September 29, 2008
I was leading a group on a dragonfly identification workshop when I spotted these glorious critters. The same species was photographed at pretty much the same location a few months later by Mike Rickard; I posted his photo, which was identified, while my pics were languishing in a folder on my computer waiting to be processed much later...

Moved from Itzalana. ID by Ed Riley

Moved from Alaruasa lepida.

Alaruasa?
I'm not saying you are wrong - didn't know that they came in a short-winged form! The color is quite different from A. lepida, even though there is only supposed to be a single species in this genus.

P.S. - I'd love to see the nymph!

Corrected ID
Hi Andy - I would say that there is no doubt I was wrong! (see my comment on the page with the *real* A. lepida photo). Texas A&M master entomologist Ed Riley has ID'd this critter as Itzalana submaculata Schmidt (Fulgoridae). Glad to know I was at least in the right family... The Guide has no page for this species yet; I'll create one soon if nobody beats me to it.
