Adjutant Wainscot Moth - Leucania adjuta

Adjutant Wainscot Moth - Leucania adjuta
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
July 31, 2005
Attracted to porch light. I think it may be a Many-lined Wainscot Moth, Hodges #10446, Leucania multilinea? Help appreciated.

Noctuid
You may very well be right, but I think it looks a fraction more like Hodges # 10456 Leucania adjuta

Looks like I was wrong. I had a really hard time seeing the diferences between the two. Thanks.

I agree with adjuta. The similar L. lapidaria and multilinea both have dark shading along the inner margin of the forewing, lacking in adjuta and the above photo. And the similar L. phragmitidicola is too pale, lacking the dark shading that begins in the middle of the forewing and angles toward the apex. Compare images of all four species.

Thank you, Robin. The comparison of the four images and your explanation really helped me see the differences between them.
