Thanks Tim for all the ID's on these water beetles. I went on ahead and posted a shot of the underside.

based on the features seen on the ventral shot. Nice pics of an impressive-looking water beetle!

Most likely Hydrophilus
But there is another similar sized genus in the east called Dibolocelus- a shot of the underside will help confirm at least genus

Just learnt that Dibolocelus and Hydrophilus are synonyms. Moving to genus page.
