Horn, G.H. (1872) Synopsis of the Malachiidae of United States. Trans. Amer. Ent. Soc., 4: 109-127.

The following synopsis of our Malachiidae contains all the species known to me as inhabiting our territory. Collops is not included, as a descriptive catalogue has already been presented in the preceding volume of these Transactions.

Introduction

The purpose of the present paper is threefold: first, to present a generic revision of the family, with a new key to the genera; second, to offer a new key to the species of the revised genus Anthocomus, which is made necessary by the inclusion in that genus of certain other groups of species; and third, to record some observations on various species which have been made sin

The present number of these Studies is largely the result of examination of some four thousand specimens of Malachiidae, belonging to the California Academy of Sciences. This material constitutes the bulk of the Academy’s collection in this family, except for the genus Attalus, which I examined in connection with Studies III (1), and also includes the Ralph Hopping coll

The purpose of the present paper is to present descriptions of new species and subspecies of Malachiidae which have come to light during the past year in the course of identifying material in that family for several museums and colleges, as well as observations on already known species which I hope will contribute to the better understanding of those species. Most of the material on which the paper is based has been referred to me by the following institutions:

Introduction

The primary purpose of the present paper is a revision of the genus Attalus Erichson, which has not been revised since Horn (1872) presented his synopsis of the family. However, in gathering together the material necessary for this revision, the collections of the entire family belonging to several institutions were carefully examined and, in the course of this work, which involved the identification of several thousand specimens, a number of undescribed species of other genera were discovered, variational and other noteworthy observations were made on already known species, and unrecorded distributional data were secured on many species.
