Sphaerophoria contigua - male

Sphaerophoria contigua - Male
Martha's Chapel Road, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA
May 3, 2009
Size: 9 mm
Size estimated. I'm pretty sure it is a male, given the holoptic eyes--usually indicating a male in this family. (Other images of this genus indicate the abdominal shape of the male is diagnostic, agreeing with my idea about the eyes.)

Moved from Sphaerophoria.

Sphaerophoria, I'd say.
But I've been wrong on these before. We have several lightly patterned Sphaerophoria, including this one with expert ID.

Note that the pattern on yours is light at the far end of the abdomen, while the area closest to the thorax seems unaffected. The absence of the short longitudinal stripe of M. cinctella would thus seem to be something more than a faded pattern.

Looks good
Thanks. I don't know how I missed that one.
