Size: very small
This fly is half out of focus - the fly was too near the ground and the ground was crawling with ticks of every kind we have here.
I decided to sacrifice focus in favor of fewer tick bites by not laying on the ground. It flew after one shot anyway.

Moved

Moved
Moved from Acalyptratae. After consulting with Owen Lonsdale we are ruling out Clusiidae. Note that other piophilids on Bugguide (Prochyliza xanthostoma and Mycetaulus) are somewhat unusual and look quite different than most other members of this family.

Sepsidae?
Compare Sepsidae

Not quite sure
Not a sepsid. Should be either a Piophilidae or a Clusiidae.

Thank you, Matthias
"either a Piophilidae or a Clusiidae"
I don't see it that I can recognize in either of those.

This fly was very black and glossy, except for the eyes which were very bright red even in the shade.

I'm wishing I had ignored the ticks since I have not seen one of these flies since.

I know
It is very dark for a clusiid, and there aren't many piophilid images to compare it with. This is something that has not shown up before on Bugguide and therefore worth keeping.
