Moved from Acalyptratae. After consulting with Owen Lonsdale we are ruling out Clusiidae. Note that other piophilids on Bugguide (Prochyliza xanthostoma and Mycetaulus) are somewhat unusual and look quite different than most other members of this family.

Not a sepsid. Should be either a Piophilidae or a Clusiidae.

I don't see it that I can recognize in either of those.

This fly was very black and glossy, except for the eyes which were very bright red even in the shade.

I'm wishing I had ignored the ticks since I have not seen one of these flies since.

It is very dark for a clusiid, and there aren't many piophilid images to compare it with. This is something that has not shown up before on Bugguide and therefore worth keeping.
