scale crawlers and eggs - Eulecanium kunoense

scale crawlers and eggs - Eulecanium kunoense
San Leandro, Alameda County, California, USA
May 25, 2005
Size: < 1mm each
These are the eggs and crawlers from inside one female scale that I was watching on my desk for a few weeks. The scale from which these came had no opening; I broke this one open when other eggs started hatching from other scales. In this pile you can see lots of eggs, white egg "covers" from hatched eggs, and some crawlers (newly hatched scales). The crawlers have visible legs, eyes, and antennas.

See this photo to see crawlers coming out of an adult female scale.
