Insects on Mexican Hat plant stems - Lepyronia gibbosa

Insects on Mexican Hat plant stems - Lepyronia gibbosa
Copperas Cove , Coryell County, Texas, USA
May 5, 2009
While observing new growth of Mexican Hat plants I noticed a white bubbly substance on many of the stems. Closer examination revealed these small insects beneath and emerging from the white bubbly substance. They are approx. 1/4 inch in length.

Lepyronia gibbosa
The dark stripes are characteristic of this genus (see view/182154#277195). There is only one species recorded from TX.

The very red abdomens suggest that you have "boosted" the contrast on this photo.
