Hover Fly - Dasysyrphus intrudens - male

Hover Fly - Dasysyrphus intrudens - Male
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
May 9, 2009
Size: approx 10mm
Found sunning itself in my alley on leaf of Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus.

Moved
Moved from Dasysyrphus.

I think Dasysyrphus intrudens
I think Dasysyrphus intrudens species complex, using the new Locke and Skevington key (Zootaxa 3660, 2013). I'm not 100% sure that the maculae on tergies 3-4 appear to reach the edge of the abdomen; if they don't, than this is probably D. occidualis instead.

If the yellow maculae do in fact reach the edge of the abdomen, the maculae on 3+4 fit the description of the intrudens species complex (arcuate/lunulate, U/V shape on anterior edge, constricted in the middle, large swelling on medial edge) better than they fit D. venustus (venustus is described as the maculae being transverse, constricted slightly medially, medial edge swollen slightly).

occidualis is also in our area, and has a more constricted set of maculae on tergite 4 than on tergite 3, which seems consistent with this fly as well. Its maculae do seem to be less deeply curved than either the intrudens complex or this fly, which is the other reason why I think this is the intrudens complex even though I can't see the edge of the abdomen for certain.

Moved
Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Yes
It's a Dasysyrphus species, a male.
Greetings

Thank you!
I appreciate the ID!

The fly certainly matches guide images for Dasysyrphus
But I don't know if there are other possibilities. Hopefully, you'll get an expert comment. Nice find, at any rate.

I think it is
But I've been away from BugGuide so long, I'm trying to be a bit cautious about doing my own ID's.

I took a hiatus and felt the same way.
And I did it again after cataract surgery! It all comes back fast. Meanwhile, I'll keep watching.

thanks!
I'm sure glad to be back :)
