Cicadae - Platypedia minor

Cicadae - Platypedia minor
Sunol regional park , California, USA
May 9, 2009
Size: 2 cm
I was pretty sure all of the clicking in the trees were caused by the Cicadae . It took a while to find one and judging from all the clicking there must have been hundreds . I was amazed at how cute as a bug he was . Any information on this fellow will further my buggie knowledge , thanks , sincerely Beth

"Wing-banger"
This is probably in the genus Platypedia, or something closely related. The males produce sound by striking their wings on the substrate they are perched on. They do not have the complex organs of other cicadas.

Platypedia
The very large costal cell is characteristic of a few species in this genus, but I can't tell you which ones.

neat critter
That's a cool looking cicada. It sure is tiny! I've never seen any that small. I like it's color too.
