weevils - Hypera rumicis - Male Female
Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, USA
May 10, 2009
Size: ~5 mm
On leaf of Smooth Dock (Rumex altissimus) in old field. There were others on the same plant, but bumping the plant during photography caused them to drop to the ground and vanish.

has to be Hypera rumicis...
...although i suspect the black dots have been overstressed by image processing -- am i right?

Thanks
Yes, I did adjust the contrast to reduce the "washed-out" appearance of the original colors; I have attached an unprocessed image for comparison. I hadn't realized that I had overstressed the dots; I'll be watchful of that effect in the future.

thanks!
the processing made them look very unnatural, in fact, hardly recognizable. washed-out colors are fine. pls be aware that the effect may prevent identification or lead to mis-IDs.

Good advice
I replaced the processed image with the unprocessed one now appearing on this page (and then frassed the duplicate). Thanks for your kind advice!
