Crane Fly - Tipula dorsimacula - female

Crane Fly - Tipula dorsimacula - Female
Springfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
May 2, 2009
Size: 29mm
I believe this is a female Tipula dorsimacula. She was found in my garden running around on the ground. As she was running about she would tap the end of her abdomen to the ground. Was she laying eggs? Behavior always interests me. Thanks for the help!!

Yes, it is a
female Tipula dorsimacula and she was looking for suitable spots to lay her eggs. - Chen

Thanks Chen
I'm glad that you let me know what she was doing. I saw several in different areas of that garden doing the same thing. Either that or she was following me around :)

You are welcome
and if you still wonder why they are following you, check out here .

I see. They must like all
I see.

They must like all the organic mulch in my garden.
