Thread-waisted wasp. - Ammophila aberti - Female

I have to admit I am pretty proud of this image. This was one of several females nesting in a flat, open area in the park. The soil is dry and hard. The wasps literally have to bite out pieces and it is a slow and laborious process. I have a real admiration for the hard work these ladies go through to insure the next generation prospers.

Moved from Ammophila. Image identified by Arnold S. Menke, world authority on the genus.
