Leaf-roll thief weevil on oak - Pterocolus ovatus

Leaf-roll thief weevil on oak - Pterocolus ovatus
Madera Canyon, Mnt Baldy Trail, St Cruz County, Arizona, USA
May 12, 2009
Size: 3 mm
What the Thief steals:
"The leaf roller on oak is Attelabus or Himatolabus, both of which are in the Attelabidae. The thief weevil is Pterocolus which steals the roll after it is formed by working its way into the roll round and round between the leaf surfaces, without damaging it and eats or destroys the egg or larva in residence and then lays its own egg to consume the nidus or leaf roll. It cannot roll a leaf but goes from one to another stealing them for its offspring. It is a great example of kleptoparasitism." Charles O'Brien

You find the neatest stuff! You must have eagle-eyes!

Warbler eyes more likely!

Yes,
I guess that would be more to the point! :)
