Bolas spider - Mastophora cornigera - female

Bolas spider - Mastophora cornigera - Female
La Jolla, San Diego County, California, USA
May 4, 2009
Size: about 5/8"
Out for a walk one night, I was very excited to find this Bolas spider, patiently fishing for moths on the underside of a leaf. I had never seen one of these in person before.

Marvelous
A great series of images! I hope no one frasses any of them, as these photos not only show the spider but also its behavior and egg sac. Valuable stuff!

This is definitely a great series...
...and (don't worry) it seems very unlikely that any of these images would be slated for frass. They are all of good quality and there are relatively few images of this species currently represented in the guide.

...
Thanks for the compliments! I was very happy to find this spider and be able to post these photos. I wish I could take video of her; it was pretty fascinating to watch her movements when she was "fishing" and wrapping her eggs up...
