Pediciid Crane Fly - Dicranota maculata - male

Pediciid Crane Fly - Dicranota maculata - Male
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
May 16, 2009
By the time I tried to move around for a more dorsal shot, it was long gone... :(

Moved
Moved from Tipulomorpha.

Moved
Moved from Flies.

Insect
Among the arthropods, only insects have wings. As for ID, it's no doubt a Crane Fly, Order Diptera Infraorder Tipulimorpha. Best to wait to see if our fly experts can take it any further.

Six legs, wings, d'oh!

Head doesn't look right for a Crane Fly. I'll wait for Chen on that one though. Body looks midge-ish, but again, the head doesn't look right.

Good point
Maybe something along the lines of:

Hmmm... not bad
Now I wish I'd gotten that dorsal shot even more!! I'll have to do some more traipsing through the woods behind my house over the next few weeks. I have a feeling there are a few more surprises to be found.
