Darkling beetle -
Gnatocerus guatemalensis
-
Chantilly, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA

Size: ~ 3 mm
Found under the bark of a rotting tree. My best guess is

.

from Warren Steiner: "Gnatocerus but not cornutus...
"This one has been going by the name
guatemalensis
but according to Larry Watrous who is revising the genus, this has been a long-standing misidentification. Not sure yet what name he has decided on."

I agree!
When I first saw a male photo of
G. cornutus
in the pdf document with the key (Florida ~), I almost exclude this species. But, I found the female is very different from the male when I checked the eastern species list and the photos on the same site.
As for the size, I measured again and confirmed it's about 3 mm.

Dear
I think that this species is not Gnatocerus cornutus.
Now, I am working on a project about this pest.
In the female of this species, you can not see the mandibule from top.
please see the real picture of this species at below links:
http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/teneb/g_cornutus.htm
I think that this is Gnatocerus maxillosus.

Thanks for the information!
Thanks for informing of the important feature of the female of
G. cornutus
!
I agree that this is not
G. cornutus
. But I think it's also different from
G. maxillosus
. Please refer to Warren Steiner's above comment.
