Fungi Eater - Bolitotherus cornutus - male

Fungi Eater - Bolitotherus cornutus - Male
Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas, USA
May 16, 2009
Size: 1/2 inch
Found a bunch of these eating the underside of an Artist's Conk fungi. I've never seen these before and I've been researching fungi for 3 years now.
The fungi was almost resting on rotting leaves but they had dug tunnels all thru the conks.
I also noticed he seems to be hosting some mites on his head?

fairly common here in NJ on hard shelf fungi

Very nice thanx! I'm normally
Very nice thanx! I'm normally studying the stemmed or gilled fungi in my area...have never really paid that much attention to the bracket/shelf/woody kinds that this fellow and his mates were found under.
A great read up on this guy also...up until the late 1990's it was believed they just died after their food source was gone...then researchers realized they flew to a new one.
Another neat bit of info? Is that the live on average 5 years...and have even been known to live up to 15!
