Cool find!
I've been looking for these in the Bay Area, but haven't found one yet... I agree with your general impression, but can't comment on the genus ID. Hopefully one of our salticid enthusiasts will be able to ID this one - do you have any other photos of this spider?

Thanks!
I uploaded a couple more photos... I had to delete like 90% of the pictures I took of the spider because they were completely out of focus, unfortunately. The spider was so small that it was extremely difficult to make my point-and-shoot camera focus anywhere on the spider itself.

Synageles
While working through some salticids at the California Academy of Sciences, I was able to compare your pictures to some of the original descriptions and specimens. It is certainly a member of the genus Synageles based on its small size, exceptionally large ocular area, and rather "squared off" head. In the local Peckhamia, the ocular area is smaller, the carapace slightly more elongate and it slopes down to the anterior median eyes. Three species have been described from California, but without palp or epigynum images this is about as far as we can get. Excellent find!
