Strange little bee-like critter - Bombylius varius

Strange little bee-like critter - Bombylius varius
Tallassee , Alabama, USA
May 20, 2009
Size: small
It was smaller than a honey bee and it has peculiar spots on it's back end! Any body know what family it belongs to? I think it could be a Carpenter bee of some flavor?

Moved
Moved from Bee Flies.

Thanks!
This is such a neat bug. Thanks for letting me know what it is! I have never seen one like this before. Thanks for cropping it as well.

I cropped this image...
Only yourself and editors can click on your images for the full size version. All other viewers see only the small size (560 pixel maximum on the longest side). Cropping images help to get an ID by making the insect more visible to all viewers. This way the 560 pixel limit is fill with insect rather than background...

This looks like Bombylius varius to me.

But please wait for an expert to confirm this or correct me :)

Thanks for sharing these images with us and Welcome to BugGuide!

Bombylius
I agree, this appears to be a female of Bombylius varius.
