as usual an awesome pic!It is a female Brachyopa, the larvae are living in sap of tree wounds... You can find the larvae nearly the whole year, but the adults are flying only a few weeks..

The short adult period explains why these flies aren't seen too often.

 
But when you hang out in fron
But when you hang out in front of a big tree with a big ozing wound, you will find many of these and Ceriana and Sphiximorpha and Ferdinandea and maybe Psilota... all very nice genera which are only living in this special niche. Keep an eye open and you will find some very rare flies...
