landed on my arm, allowed me to place it on leaf then photo it.

Probably 6908 - Nepytia semiclusaria
.. they vary as to depth of gray coloration. MPG has a couple of examples very much like this from both Carolinas. 6909 - Nepytia pellucidaria can also look pretty much like this but may run to lighter shades of gray. It flies later in the year and probably doesn't reach the Carolinas. (no rsvp, thanks)
