Stag beetle - Ceruchus piceus - male

Stag beetle - Ceruchus piceus - Male
Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
May 22, 2009
Size: ~ 14 mm
Found in a rotting log. When I stepped on the log to go across a fallen tree, the log fell into pieces and some stag beetles appeared including this one.

My best guess is a male of Ceruchus piceus.

correct on both counts
nice beetle, as always

Front tibia
Interesting that their front tibia shows no sexual dimorphism. This seems to be very pronounced in the Lucanus genus, only.
I wonder if anybody knows anything about the way that they nest?

An early sighting, well done.
