Very, Very BIG Bug - Tabanus americanus - Female
Lake Worth, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
May 23, 2009
Size: Approx half-inch

Tabanus americanus
Solid green eyes (in life) and orange basal plate with dorsal projection pointing forward readily identify this female horse fly. This thing was probably closer to an inch long too.

BIG Bug
Thank you, all, for your help.

It's funny, I now live in Florida but I grew up on Long Island, getting chewed up by Horse Flies and I NEVER saw - or even heard - of ANYTHING like this.

Welcome to Bug Guide, Dean
