Grass-Carrying Wasp - Isodontia - female

Grass-Carrying Wasp - Isodontia - Female
Hill Forest, east of Flat River, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 20, 2005
Size: circa 25 mm
This Grass-Carrying Wasp was seen flying along a road trailing a large pieces of grass. It was taking these to a nest in a cut-off stem of Kidneyleaf Rosin-weed, Silphium compositum, on the road margin. I was able to wait beside the stem and pre-focus, then get shots on a couple of visits, but wow, it was fast.

Presumably a female, since only they build nests, I believe. Presumably either I. mexicana or I. apicalis, based on Eric Eaton's comments on other images.

Moved

Wow,
I'll be more careful what I pull out of the ground from now on.

Just fascinating!
