Canthon chalcites or pilularius - Canthon

Canthon chalcites or pilularius - Canthon
Hill Forest, east of Flat River, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 11, 2005
Size: 17 mm
Detail of head, pronotum, while restrained gently. Eyes are large, for a member of this genus, a characteristic of C. vigilans, Harpootlian, p. 12, fig. 13. (1) Quoting from the description in Scarab Beetles of South Carolina, (1):
"Canthon vigilans LeConte 1858:16. 13-20 mm. Black, with slight purple hue in many specimens. Densely granulate with mixed small and large granules. Clypeus deeply bidentate, teeth subtriangular; eyes large."
Image updated 7/4/22.
ID updated 3/14/24--see comments. Eyes not large, like vigilans. We had no images of that species when I followed they key back in 2005. Here's an image of that species, showing the much larger eyes:

Moved from Tumblebugs. Reversing myself, looking at keys (1) and detailed descriptions (2), plus images here of C. vigilans, C. pilularis, and C. chalcites, this does look consistent with vigilans.
