dung flies mating - Scathophaga stercoraria - male - female

dung flies mating - Scathophaga stercoraria - Male Female
Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
May 24, 2009
Size: 1cm
When I opened up my compost I saw scads of these yellow dung flies, about the size of a house fly. They were going right to it on the compost, taking every opportunity to mate. Soon after I added some of the compost to my front garden, they appeared there. I tried probably close to 100 images before I got a half decent one. The females seem to be a little duller.
