Explanation of Names
Canescens is Latin meaning "becoming gray."

Forewing length 6-11 mm. Males larger than females, unusual for Sesiidae.

Wingspan: ♂ 20-25 mm, ♀ 17-21 mm.

Range
Washington, Montana, south to western Texas, Arizona and extreme southeastern California.

Type Location: Colorado.
Season
Most records of adults from September, October and November but some from February and March in the south.

Larvae apparently bore in the roots mallows and have been reared on
alkali mallow (
Malvella leprosa, Malvaceae).
