Explanation of Names
Canescens is Latin meaning "becoming gray." (1)
Size
Forewing length 6-11 mm. Males larger than females, unusual for Sesiidae. (2), (3)
Wingspan: ♂ 20-25 mm, ♀ 17-21 mm. (4)

Adult - see Duckworth & Eichlin in Print References.
Range
Washington, Montana, south to western Texas, Arizona and extreme southeastern California. (2), (3)
Type Location: Colorado.
Season
Most records of adults from September, October and November but some from February and March in the south. (2)
Food
Larvae apparently bore in the roots mallows and have been reared on alkali mallow (Malvella leprosa, Malvaceae). (2), (3)
