I've always wondered what these little things were. They look so Alice in Wonderland. I'm guessing some sort of wasp?

Ha ha ha. I forgot to look up
Ha ha ha. I forgot to look up "common" as part of the name because every bug that eludes my identification usually starts with the word "common." Oh well, I've been pretty lucky finding the UNcommon ones on BugGuide. Thanks for replying so soon and no, I am not shamed to discover another common bug name. :-) They might be called common but they never seem to look common (for example, the common sphinx or hawk moth).

From our vertebrate perspective, all insects are most uncommon creatures! It often is the case that once I notice the first individual of a particular species, including this one, where I live near St. Louis, I then see many of them.
