Tiger Moth - Apantesis figurata - male

Tiger Moth - Apantesis figurata - Male
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
May 26, 2009
Size: 13mm (1/2")
Grammia f-pallida ? But the stripes on the thorax don't appear to be consistent to me.

Bob,
I haven't had a chance to change formats on the moths yet so please be patient. The next batch will be square. And I'm also checking into sizes.

Moved
Moved from Grammia f-pallida.

Moved to be with
most of your other similar photos. However, I'm not sure if perhaps these might all really be Grammia figurata. Perhaps somebody more in the know will be able to enlighten us all further?? :o)

I think this one is the same too, whichever species they are:

I haven't really learned this
genus yet, even though they are among my favorites. [I'm stil trying to figure out what makes Apantesis different from Grammia.] One thing that I have learned is that in most of the species there is quite a bit of individual variation, usually in the extent of the dark and light markings and often in the hue and intensity of the light markings. In other species, some individuals can be nearly all light in color, and can be found mating with others that are nearly black in appearance.

My gut reaction is that you've got the right name, and this one is just a bit on the dark side.
