Another fly

Another fly
Essex, Ontario, Canada
Size: 3mm
Turned out not to bad.

Sphaeroceridae
Moved from Shore Flies. Note bristles on mid tibia.

ID
The head shape suggests Ephydridae, a shore fly.

Nice, particularly for something so small!
A quick take on your photos: You're doing fine with cropping. (Many new contributors don't go tight enough.) Some of your other shots are on the dark side; you can probably correct that at least somewhat with software.

To improve your odds of getting fast, accurate IDs, shots like this from the side are fine, but if you can only get one angle, try for a straight down shot. With flies, wing vein patterns can be important. Also, face shots are helpful with many flies.

Look at other posts, and you'll get the idea. Don't be discouraged if some of your first submissions go without IDs. Keep at it; we like to see your stuff!

Thanks.
I've been taking photos like a madman over the past few years. I've been slowly learning my camera and trying to get better. I do know some are on the dark side. I'm just kinda lazy sometimes like that = P

I usually only do the tweaking before I print something, but I will fix them more when posting here. I do apologize for my laziness.

As for shooting at a certain angle. I try. I do find when you change positions on a lot of these things. They fly away. I try to grab what I can of them, but I am also guilty of wanting to take certain shots. I love side profiles and such.

I promise not to get discouraged either. I'll just keep taking more shots. It's a good excuse to do what I love.

Good attitude!
